Reforms to improve casino regulations announced

The NSW Government will implement reforms to modernise regulation of the state's casinos was passed by Parliament today in March 2018.

This follows last year's release of the Casino Modernisation Review and the Government's response to it.

The reforms support a more modern casino regulatory regime and recommended:

  • a more risk-based regulatory approach with targeted intervention and tougher penalties for serious compliance breaches
  • stronger measures to prevent and reduce gambling-related harms associated with problem gambling at casinos
  • changes to create consistency in regulatory requirements for Sydney casinos' high-value player offering.

With Crown Sydney expected to open in 2021, the changes will ensure a modern regulatory regime is applied consistently to both Crown Sydney and The Star.

The review was undertaken by independent consultants The Agenda Group as part of the NSW Government's commitment to update casino regulation to cater for this new competitive environment.
